CARRY ON MY WAYWARD POLL
THERE’ll BE PEACE WHEN WE HAVE WON
FORCE YOUR WEARY HAND TO VOTE
I am frankly bothered by the fact that Dean & Castiel might win that poll about best TV couple of 2012. For the simple fact that they are not a couple.
Had it been a poll about ‘best ship’ or ‘favourite ship of the internet’ or whatever, of course. I’d love for a Spn ship to win, even if it’s not mine. But this is different: they are not a couple (let me state it again because it seems that this fact is largely unclear), and yet it seems that the fanbase of this ship is the only one that relentlessly, obsessively keeps insisting that their ship is real, that it will become canon, that it would be canon already if Edlund ran the show/Jensen wasn’t a homophobe/Sam’s character died/whatever, that it actually is canon but we’re all too blind and stupid to see it.
I will never, ever go around preaching how wincest is canon, and how it might happen, and how secretly it should happen, and whatnot, because in all the fandoms I’ve been in, I’ve always been very clear on one simple fact: that my ship is not the canon of the show, and that’s ok. That’s what ships are for: to create my personal canon. Not, and I repeate not, to try and force my ship onto the canon, down everybody’s throat, reaching levels of pathological delusion insisting that it’s real, no seriously, it is.
So I’m bothered by the fact that a high number of viewers disrespect the show so much that they are hellbent on twisting it according to their own shipping preferences, and are ready to present it in that twisted way to the world because that’s much better than the actual canon of the show.
I love wincest. Would I want SPN to be about the big gay relationship of Sam and Dean? No. I have fanfics for that. I love Supernatural as it is, and I’d never change it. And I wouldn’t go around the internet advertising it as something that it’s not to try and validate my ship.
Ships don’t need validation. They’re ships. They’re our view, our preference, and that’s why there’s so many different ones. To crush and dismiss and hate on the canon to force the shipping-view in its place… it just really, really bothers me.
(note: I am not tagging this post because I don’t want it to show up on the shippers’ tags and rain on their parade, or start wank. sorry if this means your tumblr savious doesn’t catch it.)
Well, I’ve been meaning to talk about this ridiculous poll that has so recently consumed my energy and frustration.
First of all though—what is this bullshit nonsense about the definition of “a couple.” Why are people condemned for hoping that Destiel will become canon?
Why will it never become canon?
(and if it’s because Dean Winchester is straight or Dean Winchester would never do it with a man because he’s straight then let me tell you that assuming that because Dean has never self-identified as queer does not mean he is straight—this is not a pole, people, with a north and a south—and that gendering Castiel as a man is also cissexist—then I would highly encourage you to check yourself)
It’s weird though—my deal with the Destiel ship is that it won’t become canon because—ba-dum-pa —
OUR SOCIETY IS TOO FUCKING HETERONORMATIVE
there. that’s it. that’s the only reason.
^
Read the ‘Read More’ because wow it is a brilliant post. Much respect for the original poster.
Y e s, people, read the ‘Read More’, this is such a flawless post about heteronormativity not only in SPN, but in TV shows in general. Props to the person who wrote it. *tips hat*
Everyone is saying about it “Vote Destiel”, which is true…but I’ve also seen a lot of people saying they won’t vote or vote against Dean and Cas because it’s Dean and Cas. Here’s my thought on it.
It’s not just a vote for Dean and Cas, no one important is seeing this poll, it’s not going to influence the way they make the show or write the scripts or anything. It’s a fun online poll.
HOWEVER.
Think about all the polls we’ve won in the past. The TV Guide fan cover poll, previous couples polls, favorite actor polls, favorite character polls, favorite show polls, THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS. It’s not about voting for a couple you like anymore, it’s never really been about that, mainly because not many of our people have been against each other, it’s rare to even see Jensen and Jared against each other in favorite actors polls. It’s not about that anymore. It’s about supporting your fandom now. This show is into it’s 7th season, possibly getting renewed for an 8th. And we still have one of the strongest fandoms out there because we band together and support each other. We are loved by those who create the show for us, our actors and writers, and they love us, and it’s because we support them.
So for one weekend, the poll ends Monday, stop the ship wars, stop the hate, stop all of this. And band together one more time and show the internet how strong we are. It’s not about Destiel winning anymore. It’s about Supernatural winning. Who cares if you only watch the first 5 seasons, don’t give up on something like this. Who cares if no one ever sees this poll again, what they will see is how strong our fandom is and how we strive together. That we are bonded over what we believe in, our show. For one weekend, the ship wars don’t matter, the hate doesn’t matter. Wincest and Destiel and Sassy and every other pairing that’s out there, heterosexual, homosexual, or otherwise, you’re being called to defend your passion. Show the internet how strong we are and how bonded we are. We are not just lazy children who sit behind their computers reading fanfiction all day, we are writers and dreamers and believers and supporters.
We are strong.
We are Supernatural.
